Kootenai County Mountain Rescue (KCMR) is a specialized team under the Kootenai County Volunteer Search and Rescue umbrella, committed to providing expert assistance in the most demanding mountain terrain and situations, ensuring the safety and well-being of outdoor enthusiasts in our community.
KCMR is newly accredited by the Mountain Rescue Association in organized avalanche rescue and is working toward accreditation in high and low angle rock technical rope rescue.
Accreditation by the Mountain Rescue Association is quite challenging, reflecting their high standards of training and preparedness.
Most of KCMR’s members live and work in Kootenai and Shoshone County, and come to the unit with a diverse set of skills and experience extremely useful to the unit’s mission.
For example, our members are climbers, EMTs, ski patrollers, backcountry skiers, avid snowmobilers, and experienced search and rescue volunteers.
This team of dedicated volunteers are proficient in avalanche rescue, travel, and technical rope rescues in both vertical and lower angle terrain, ensuring they are ready to respond to the most challenging and remote mountain emergencies year around.
KCMR is newly formed and concentrating on accreditation by the Mountain Rescue Association, so the team has not yet been deployed as a technical rescue unit. However, its members, most of whom have been with VSAR for years, have been involved in organized avalanche rescues, use of ropes when needed, and searches all over Kootenai County and the surrounding region. Pursuit of accreditation by the Mountain Rescue Association takes these skills to the next level.
The primary goals of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Volunteer SAR team are centered around safety, efficiency, and community service.
